Garfield has no Ukrainian roots, though he has Polish Jewish, Russian Jewish, and Romanian Jewish ancestry (great-grandparents from Kielce, Poland). He has never visited Ukraine. At the SAG Awards on February 27, 2022 — three days after the invasion — he was one of the few actors to address the war publicly: "It's a tricky day to celebrate... keeping what's happening in Ukraine in our hearts." No further Ukraine-specific statements or organizational work were found.

Jessica Chastain represents the strongest bridge — they co-starred in The Eyes of Tammy Faye (2021) and share a deeply personal bond (Chastain rearranged the filming schedule so Garfield could be with his dying mother). Chastain visited Ukraine in August 2022. Benedict Cumberbatch's production company SunnyMarch produced Garfield's We Live in Time (2024), and Cumberbatch is vocally pro-Ukraine. Both also co-signed the Artists4Ceasefire letter. Sesame Workshop, with which Garfield collaborated on a viral grief video in 2024, has active programming for Ukrainian children.

Garfield has no personal foundation but serves as Ambassador of Sport for the Worldwide Orphans Foundation (since 2011, working with founder Dr. Jane Aronson). He supports LGBTQ+ rights (GLAAD), cancer research (Stand Up To Cancer), grief awareness (Sesame Workshop), and male sexual abuse survivors (SurvivorsUK). He signed the Artists4Ceasefire letter.
