Carrey has no Ukrainian roots and has never visited Ukraine. However, he has a clear pro-Ukraine stance expressed primarily through political art and social media. On February 26, 2022, he tweeted artwork of a tattered teddy bear lamenting civilians "put in harm's way by yet another of history's grandiose political jerks." He promoted the CNN documentary Navalny and had an extensive pre-2022 track record of anti-Putin political cartoons. In November 2022, Russia banned Carrey among 100 Canadians for "Russophobic" activities. He drew a political cartoon in 2019 depicting Trump pressuring Zelenskyy during the Ukraine phone call scandal — an indirect Zelenskyy interaction.

The strongest bridge is Sean Penn — they were co-cast in the Farrelly Brothers' The Three Stooges project, both are outspoken progressive activists, and both are banned by Russia. Jessica Chastain shares WME representation and visited Ukraine in 2022. Carrey and Jennifer Lopez both worked on In Living Color simultaneously in the early 1990s.
